BESSIE M. WEIRICK, '14, Registrar-emeritus, Beloit College staff member for thirty-eight years, died in Beloit Hospital on Commencement Day, June 9....A graduate of Beloit high school, she returned there to teach following her college training, and also taught at Warren, Ill. She joined the college staff in 1919, working in the office of the registrar (then a faculty member) and in 1923 became the College's first full-time registrar, holding that post until her retirement with emeritus rank in 1957. During her service to the College she had worked under five of Beloit's six presidents: Brannon, Eaton (who served ad interim in 1923), Maurer, Croneis and Upton. She had also taught German and Latin, and held associate professor rank. She had been named an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1956, and was active in state and national associations of registrars, heading the state association at one time. She was also active in social and club affairs in the city. She was 71. At the 1959 Commencement, she was awarded a Distinguished Service Citation when her class observed its 45th reunion, and at that time was praised for her insistence upon high standards of scholarship "which has enhanced every Beloit degree".
