Interpreter, Statesman, Public Servant Bachelor of Arts, Beloit, 1909; student interpreter at American Legation, Peiping, 1910.  Vice Consul and Consul at Tientsin, Canton, Chungking, 1912-1927; Secretary of American Legation, Peiping, 1921-1927; State Department, Washington, 1927-1930.  Consul Shanghai, 1930-1934; Consul General at Hankow, 1934-1939; at Vancouver 1939; Consul General at Shanghai, 1945-1948.  In keeping with the recommendation of the Alumni Council, it gives me great pleasure to present you with this Award of Merit.
