51st Annual Beloit and Vicinity Exhibition Opening Reception
|
The warmth of summer brings the promise of new vitality as the 51st Annual Beloit and Vicinity Exhibition opens in Beloit College’s Wright Museum of Art in mid-May. Long a feature of the museum’s spring programming, the rejuvenated exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, May 16, at 5 p.m., in the museum’s courtyard gallery. This event is free and open to the public.
In years past, the Beloit and Vicinity Exhibition filled the galleries of the Wright Museum of Art during the college’s spring semester. This year, the opening reception will coincide with the city of Beloit’s kick-off of the summer Artwalk, a weekend celebration that attracts hundreds of people to downtown establishments for a look at the local art scene.
“We hope that by coordinating these two regional art events, we will be able to draw greater attention to Beloit’s growing art community,” says Joy Beckman, director of the Wright Museum of Art.
The weekend of the community Artwalk offers a fresh opportunity to present the Beloit and Vicinity Exhibition. The popular and highly anticipated show features the best pieces created by outstanding regional artists, as chosen by a panel of judges. It attracts entrants from Wisconsin and its neighboring states of Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. Selected works will be displayed in the north and south galleries of the museum, and four will receive awards for artistic merit.
Like the exhibition, the Beloit Artwalk highlights the creativity of area residents. More than 45 artists will be stationed in Beloit businesses to showcase and sell one-of-a-kind pieces. Trolley rides will be available to shuttle visitors from the Wright Museum to city venues and back again throughout the weekend. More information about the Artwalk can be found online at www.visitbeloit.com.
The 51st Annual Beloit and Vicinity Exhibition will remain on display in the Wright Museum of Art through July 17. Viewing hours are Tuesdays through Sundays, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and admission to the museum is free and open to the public. For details, contact Beckman at 608-363-2097.
