n PRESIDENTIAL FAREWELL
The President's reception for seniors, their families, faculty, staff, and guests will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in the Beloit Poetry Garden, prior to the Baccalaureate service (rain location: Godfrey Anthropology Building).

COMMENCEMENT 2008
More than 300 students in the Beloit College class of 2008 will receive their degrees on Sunday, May 11, at 11 a.m., on the lawn in front of Middle College. Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and an award-winning poet, will deliver the Commencement address at the ceremony. (In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Flood Arena, in the Sports Center.) This event is free and open to the public.

n MAY CITY CENTER SEMINAR
The Beloit College department of economics and management and Visit Beloit will present another City Center Seminar on Thursday, May 8, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Vision Beloit offices in downtown Beloit. The seminar will feature guest speaker Bill Ryan, of the Center for Community and Economic Development at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, on Thursday, May 8, from noon to 1 p.m. The Vision Beloit offices are located at 500 Public Ave.

BACCALAUREATE SERVICE
The annual Baccalaureate service will be presented by members of the class of 2008 on Saturday, May 10, at 5 p.m., in Eaton Chapel.

n ANNUAL CHAPIN RECEPTION
The annual reception for members of the Beloit College Chapin Society will be held on Saturday, May 10, from 6-8 p.m., on the lawn and in the courtyard of the Wright Museum of Art. More than 175 guests are expected to attend, including some members of the Class of 2008.  The Chapin Society—the College’s most prestigious gift club level—recognizes those individuals, families, and organizations who have committed to a leadership level of generosity. Invitations are required to participate.

PHI BETA KAPPA CEREMONY
An induction ceremony for new members entering the Phi Beta Kappa honor society will take place on Saturday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m., in the Wilson Theatre, in Mayer Hall. A reception will follow at 7:30 p.m., in the Moore Lounge, in Pearsons Hall.

n BREAKFAST BEFORE GRADUATION
A continental breakfast for graduating seniors, parents, and other guests will be held on Sunday, May 11, from 8:30 until 10 a.m., in the main dining room of D.K.'s Snack Bar, in Pearsons Hall.

n PICNIC ON THE MOUNDS
The annual Picnic on the Mounds for graduates, parents, and other guests will take place immediately following Commencement on Sunday, May 11, from 1-2 p.m., on the lawn behind Eaton Chapel (rain location: Field House in the Sports Center). BELOIT & VICINITY EXHIBITION RETURNS
The 51st Annual Beloit and Vicinity Exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, May 16, from 5 to 9 p.m., in the north and south galleries in the Wright Museum of Art. The opening will complement the city of Beloit's summer Artwalk 2008 celebration; trolleys will be available to shuttle participants from the museum to downtown Beloit and back again.

Native American Pottery and Basketry - A permanent exhibit on the first floor.

Making an Impact: Halvor Skavlem's Experimental Archaeology
- An examination of the ground-breaking work of a self-taught southern Wisconsin flint-knapper who discovered ancient stone-working technologies. On display in the first floor gallery through the end of May.

Bound to the Sea: Ritual, Hunting, and Society on the Northwest Coast - An exhibit that shows how native people of the Pacific Northwest developed complex social and political systems in tandem with a reliance on sea mammal hunting. On display in the first floor gallery through the end of May.

51st Annual Beloit and Vicinity Exhibition
- Featuring works created by top regional artists. On display in the north and south galleries from May 16 through July 17. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 16, from 5-9 p.m.

The Beloit College Sports Center is now open on a shorter summer schedule. The new hours of operation are:

CLS SUMMER COURSES
The Center for Language Studies at Beloit College will offer summer courses in intensive Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian languages. There are four-week and eight-week courses with three sessions. The first begins on Saturday, June 14, and runs through Friday, Aug. 8. The second session runs from Saturday, June 14, until Saturday, July 12, and the third is from Sunday, July 13, until Friday, Aug. 8. To learn more, log onto the program's Web page online. Residence halls and houses close for seniors on Sunday, May 11, at 8 p.m.

SUMMER HOUSING

Summer housing contracts begin on Monday, May 12. Students who plan to remain on campus for any reason after May 12 should stop by the Residence Life Office as soon as possible to discuss housing.

BIKE STORAGE
Bikes will be cut off all outside racks on Monday, May 19.  Please move your bike to storage in Bushnell, Whitney or Porter Halls.  Residential Life will remove bikes from the bike rooms in Haven, Wood, Aldrich, and Brannon Halls on Monday, May 19. Students who are staying on campus for the summer should place a tag on their bicycles on Sunday, May 18, so that the locks are not cut.

AUTHOR TO PRESENT HER WORK
Author Emily Auerbach will present her book, Searching for Jane Austen, on Saturday, May 10, at 10 a.m., at the Beloit Public Library, located at 409 Pleasant Street in downtown Beloit. Auerbach is a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, co-host of Wisconsin Public Radio's University of the Air, and director of the Courage to Write series of radio documentaries on brave women writers. ARTWALK IN BELOIT!
Artists and art-lovers are invited to congregate for Artwalk 2008, on Friday, May 16, from 5-9 p.m., and Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Local artists will participate and area shops will open up for special hours and evening entertainment. Learn more on the Visit Beloit Web site.

n SPRING CONCERT SERIES EVENT
Max Yount (music) will present a program of Baroque music on Sunday, May 18, at 4 p.m., in the First Congregational Church, which is located at 801 Bushnell Street in Beloit. In this First Congregational Church Spring Concert Series event, Yount will play two organ canticles by Buxtehude, three harpsichord pieces by Frescobaldi and Froberger, and two organ fugues by Bach. The concert is free and open to the public (contributions will be accepted).

n CALL FOR PLEIN AIR ARTISTS
Artists are invited to join in the Plein Air Painting Event from Friday, June 6, through Saturday, June 14, around the city of Beloit. Prizes of $1,500, $750 and $500 will be awarded based on artistic merit. In addition, an "Artists Choice Award" will also be presented. Awards will be announced on Saturday, June 14, at 3 p.m., at The Villager framing shop in downtown Beloit. The sale of plein air art will continue through June.
